What is Safecontractor?
SAFEcontractor is the fastest growing health and safety accreditation scheme in the UK, with more than 160 major clients and almost 18,000 contractor members.
Registered members with the SAFEcontractor scheme include clients and contractors from a wide range of professional disciplines working within a number of industry sectors.
With its increasing membership and growing profile in the UK, the SAFEcontractor scheme is now used by many large organisations as a way of obtaining competent contractors
Principles and Purpose
Each month thousands of contractors and consultants (suppliers) apply for work with public and private sector organisations (buyers). To win work they must meet the buyer’s health & safety standards.
Assessing suppliers health and safety competence is usually a lengthy and time consuming process. Suppliers can sometimes meet one buyer’s Health and Safety standards but not another her. Being CHAS approved reduces duplication as suppliers compliance is accepted by all CHAS buyers.
CHAS assesses applicants:
-
Health and safety policy statement;
-
Their organisation for health and safety;
-
Their specific health and safety arrangements to a standard acceptable to our buyers and to others
The Stages of Assessing Competency
There are three stages in the assessment process from the time a supplier applies for a CHAS assessment, through to working for a buyer:
The CHAS assessment: if a supplier passes this assessment they have shown they can adequately manage health and safety. The employer (buyer) checks a supplier has the ability, experience and resources to carry out the specific work they have applied to do. The buyer will look at things like method statements, specific risk assessments, references, examples of previous similar work, training and available resources.
Monitoring the supplier when they are doing the work. Buyers will check suppliers are managing the work safely, carrying out the method statements properly, have enough resources, liaising properly, managing the site effectively and providing enough supervision.
The level of assessment at stages 2 and 3 are normally proportionate to the level of risk they carry. Buyers have a responsibility to monitor suppliers, making sure they are working safely, in order to protect staff and everyone who may be affected by the work.

Why use a painting & decorating association member?
Painters and decorators often come into people’s homes and businesses – so customers want to know that person or company is to be trusted and a useful source of interior design advice
.
Before being accepted for membership of the Association, companies and individuals are rigorously vetted and prospective members have to fulfil a number of requirements, including the production of evidence of more than five years' experience in the industry.
They are also obliged to carry adequate public liability insurance and references. Once accepted, members are then subjected to random checks to ensure high standards are maintained.
The PDA also investigates all complaints made against any members and endeavours to resolve any disputes through mediation.
Admittance to membership shall be conditional on the applicant firm satisfying the following minimum requirements:-
A Proprietor or a Principal of the applicant firm must: 1. (i) Have satisfactorily completed an apprenticeship under the National Joint Training Scheme for Building Operatives (Painting & Decorating) and have gained the City & Guilds of London Institute Craft Certificate and where applicable, have passed the CITB Skills Test,
OR
(ii) Provide evidence of having been employed as a Painter and Decorator for a continuous period of not less than five years.
2. Provide evidence of trading under the business name for not less than one year.
3. Meet the professional requirements of the Branch or Region to which application is being made.
4. Provide not less than two separate references from recent customers.
5. Undertake to abide by the Association’s Code of Practice.
Or in the case of a firm where the proprietor or principal is not a professional painter and decorator (e.g. Surveyor, Accountant etc.) the firm must undertake to employ operatives who satisfy the criteria of paragraph 1 and comply with paragraphs 2 to above.
MINERAL PAINTS
Benefits of using mineral paints
Mineral paints are the only true non-toxic paint since they contain no VOC's, and are made from natural ingredients including water glass (potassium silicate), earth -oxide pigments and natural minerals.
The main benefits of mineral paints are:
Non-toxic - no hazardous fumes or harmful effects on health. This is important for allergy sufferers and/or chemically sensitive people who are unable to endure chemical paints.
Environmentally Friendly - use renewable resources; are biodegradable.
Micro-Porous - allow walls and surfaces to breathe, preventing condensation and damp problems, and reducing indoor allergies. They are also less likely to flake, crack and blister.
